Grocery Stores is a series of eleven paintings of the exteriors of former and current small grocery stores in East Vancouver and Burnaby. These structures boast individuality and resilience to the urban redevelopment that surrounds them as neighbourhoods become consumed by gentrification.
Jupiter Brahms (b.1979, Roehampton, UK) is an interdisciplinary artist currently working primarily in painting and printmaking. His artistic practice consists of a series of projects which are not limited to any particular medium or format. Rather an artistic medium is chosen and developed using self initiated techniques in order to support a conceptual theme. Recent enquiries have addressed topics of identity, displacement, economic inequality and the integrity of news media in current affairs. He has also written and performed as a musician with touring
gothic glam rock band The Vampire Bats and experimental sound collective Shoe Renew . He immigrated to Canada in 2005, first settling in Toronto, ON. He presently lives and works in Vancouver, BC.
