Estuary is a compositional work that takes the viewer into a pensive cinematic state where they are allowed to view a familiar environment – a river landscape – in a completely new way. Focusing in on the intricacies of the Fraser River estuary flowing into the Pacific Ocean in British Columbia, the work, in two parts, imbues reverence for one of the most rich and diverse ecosystems in North America. Part one deals with time and texture: the water and the light reflecting off of it act as a paintbrush (through long exposures) and create an abstracted image. Part two is concerned with space and place – where part one is very much engulfed in the water itself, part two pulls back to engage with the landscape, both natural and man-made. In this way, I hope to evoke thought about our (human) interaction with our water sources, and their importance, in an elegant manner. The work is more of a way into a subject, rather than an exposition on a subject.
