The changing face of place: The Mattering Map revisited

This film explores Pia Massie’s installation at the grunt gallery: The Mattering Map (1996), and the Monica Reyes Gallery exhibition: Mattering Map Redux and Sessional Office (2019), done in conjunction with Terra Poirier. Massie’s work registered the transformations of the Mount Pleasant community over a period of twenty three years through the documentation of local diners. The artist helps us to connect the dots of where we live, eat and work, as the diners’ presence/absence reveal the everchanging face and atmosphere of the Mount Pleasant community, and shed light on issues such as housing affordability, displacement, and gentrification. This film glances into a recent past, and challenges us to examine our present as the future of Mount Pleasant community is being created.
